Focus and Scope

Focus and Scope

TJES publishes original research articles, review articles, and technical notes, that add significantly to the body of knowledge concerning science and engineering.

The Journal accepts 5 types of articles that are defined as follows:

1-Research Articles: A research article is a regular article that aims to present new findings. Manuscripts of Full-length Original Articles should include an abstract (Purpose, Methods, Results, and main Conclusion), Introduction, Experimental Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgment, and References.  Figures, and Tables. Graphics, images, and diagrams should be submitted in a high-quality original format.

2-Review Articles: A review article is an article that aims to present comprehensively already existing findings. Review articles are intended to provide an updated perspective on a certain subject that could be relevant to the readership of the journal. Review articles should include an abstract…….etc., and new findings.

3-Technical Notes: A note is an article (regular or short) that aims to present rather new findings. Technical notes do not exceed four printed pages (including figures and tables). They are the appropriate form for new findings, original preliminary results, comments on papers published in the journal, or important new records. A Technical Note should not include an abstract. Technical notes will be reviewed as normal papers.

4-Selected Conference articles: Upon an agreement with the conference committee, selected papers may be published by the Journal in a special or regular issue. In this case, the editor will appoint in collaboration with the conference committee guest editors.

5-Erratum: a correction of a published text. As a general rule, publishers issue an erratum for a production error (i.e., an error introduced during the publishing process) and a corrigendum for an author’s error. It is usually bound into the back of a book, but for a single error, a slip of paper detailing a corrigendum may be bound in before or after the page on which the error appears. An erratum may also be issued shortly after its original text is published.

Manuscripts should be submitted using the Online Manuscript Submission and tracking system (OJS system). The manuscript must be prepared using Microsoft Word. A PDF file derived from Word can be used at the initial submission beside the Word file. However, the source files (MS Word file) of the revised manuscripts are required, PDF files are no anymore accepted at this stage.

A Cover Letter should be submitted as a separate file, to clarify how the article will contribute to scientific knowledge. A Letter containing the authors’ Point-by-Point responses to reviewers’ comments is mandatory and should be submitted as a separate file along with the revised manuscripts.

SPECIFIC GUIDELINES

Article Title

The title is CAPITALIZED AND SET IN BOLDFACE (Georgia 22 point bold).

Author’s Name and Affiliation

The author’s name(s) follows the title and is left on the page (Georgia 12 point). Last names should be spelled out in full and succeeded by the author’s initials. The author’s affiliation, complete mailing address, and e-mail address (all in font size 10 point, Georgia), ORCID, and phone number are provided immediately below the author’s name.

The maximum length of the abstract is 350 words. No literature references should be contained in the abstract. The abstract should briefly state the objective and approach and give a succinct summary of results and major conclusions should be drawn in one paragraph and a single column. Emphasis should be on what was found, not what was done.

Keywords

The author should provide five to seven keywords that clearly describe the subject matter of the paper and after the abstract for indexing purposes. The keywords must be arranged alphabetically.

Text

  • Don’t use auto numbering.
  • The manuscript should be 1.5-spaced using A4 paper.

After the article passes the plagiarism checking stage, and editor or editor section check, each manuscript will be reviewed by at least three independent referees who are within the subject area.

Peer review is a critical element of scholarly publication, and one of the major cornerstones of the scientific process. Peer Review serves two key functions:

1-Acts as a filter: Ensures research is properly verified before being published

2-Improves the quality of the research: rigorous review by other experts helps to hone key points and correct inadvertent errors

Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statements

Also, you may want to read about Conflicts of interest

The following terms represent the TJES essential ethical elements of publication that should be taken into account by all the parties involved in the publication process.

For a peer-reviewed journal, the publication of articles plays an essential role in the development of a coherent network of knowledge. It is, therefore, essential that all publishers, editors, authors, and reviewers, in the process of publishing the journals, conduct themselves in accordance with the highest level of professional ethics and standards.

Publisher’s Responsibilities

We follow the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)’s Code of Conduct for Journal Publishers (Core practices). The publisher is dedicated to supporting the vast efforts of the editors, the academic contributions of authors, and the respected volunteer work undertaken by reviewers. The publisher is also responsible for ensuring that the publication system works smoothly and that ethical guidelines are applied to assist the editor, author, and reviewer in performing their ethical duties.

Editor’s Responsibilities

We follow the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)’s Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors (Core practices). In addition, some key points are listed below. The editor should acknowledge receipt of submitted manuscripts within two working days of receipt and ensure an efficient, fair, and timely review process. The editor should ensure that submitted manuscripts are processed in a confidential manner, and that no content of the manuscripts will be disclosed to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, and the publisher, as appropriate. The editor should recuse himself or herself from processing manuscripts if he or she has any conflict of interest with any of the authors or institutions related to the manuscripts. The editor should not disclose the names and other details of the reviewers to a third party without the permission of the reviewers. The editor has the right to make the final decision on whether to accept or reject a manuscript with reference to the significance, originality, and clarity of the manuscript and its relevance to the journal. The editor should by no means make any effort to oblige the authors to cite his or her journal either as an implied or explicit condition of accepting their manuscripts for publication. The editor should not use for his or her own research any part of any data or work reported in submitted and as yet unpublished articles. The editor should respond promptly and take reasonable measures when an ethical complaint occurs concerning a submitted manuscript or a published paper, and the editor should immediately contact and consult with the author. In this case, a written formal retraction or correction may also be required.

Reviewer’s Responsibilities

We follow the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)’s COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers (Core practices). In addition, some key points are listed below. The reviewer who feels unqualified to review the assigned manuscript or affirms that he or she cannot meet the deadline for completion of the review should immediately notify the editor and excuse himself or herself from the process of reviewing this manuscript. The reviewer should inform the editor and recuse himself or herself from reviewing the manuscript if there is a conflict of interest. Specifically, the reviewer should recuse himself or herself from reviewing any manuscript authored or coauthored by a person with whom the reviewer has an obvious personal or academic relationship, if the relationship could introduce bias or the reasonable perception of bias. The reviewer should treat the manuscript in a confidential manner. The manuscript should not be disclosed to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor. The reviewer should approach the peer-review job objectively. Personal criticism of the author is unacceptable. The reviewer should not use for his or her own research any part of any data or work reported in submitted and as yet unpublished articles. The reviewer should immediately notify the editor of any similarities between the manuscript under review and another paper either published or under consideration by another journal. The reviewer should immediately call to the editor’s attention a manuscript containing plagiarized material or falsified data.

Author’s Responsibilities

The author should not submit concurrent manuscripts (or manuscripts essentially describing the same subject matter) to multiple journals. Likewise, an author should not submit any paper previously published anywhere to the journals for consideration. The publication of articles on specific subject matter, such as clinical guidelines and translations, in more than one journal is acceptable if certain conditions are met. The author should present a precise and brief report of his or her research and an impartial description of its significance. The author should honestly gather and interpret his or her research data. Publishers, editors, reviewers, and readers are entitled to request the author to provide the raw data for his or her research for convenience of editorial review and public access. If practicable, the author should retain such data for any possible use after publication. The author should guarantee that the works he or she has submitted are original. If the author has used work and/or words by others, appropriate citations are required. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.

The author should indicate explicitly all sources that have supported the research and also declare any conflict(s) of interest. The author should give due acknowledgement to all of those who have made contributions to the research. Those who have contributed significantly to the research should be listed as coauthors. The author should ensure that all coauthors have affirmed the final version of the paper and have agreed on its final publication. The author should promptly inform the journal editor of any obvious error(s) in his or her published paper and cooperate earnestly with the editor in retraction or correction of the paper. If the editor is notified by any party other than the author that the published paper contains an obvious error, the author should write a retraction or make the correction based on the medium of publication.

Conflicts of interest

Conflict of interest exists when an author (or the author’s institution), reviewer, or editor has financial or personal relationships that inappropriately influence (bias) his or her actions (such relationships are also known as “dual commitments”, “competing interests”, or “competing loyalties”).

Editor

Editors and editorial board members will not use unpublished information disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research purposes without the authors’ explicit written consent. Privileged information or ideas obtained by editors as a result of handling the manuscript will be kept confidential and not used for their personal advantage. Editors will recuse themselves from considering manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships/connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers; instead, they will ask another member of the editorial board to handle the manuscript.

Referees

Any invited referee who has conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies or institutions connected to the manuscript and the work described therein should immediately notify the editors to declare their conflicts of interest and decline the invitation to review so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.

Unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the express written consent of the authors. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for the reviewer’s personal advantage. This applies also to invited reviewers who decline the review invitation.

Author

Authors should—at the earliest stage possible (generally by submitting a disclosure form at the time of submission and including a statement in the manuscript)—disclose any conflicts of interest that might be construed to influence the results or their interpretation in the manuscript. Examples of potential conflicts of interest that should be disclosed include financial ones such as honoraria, educational grants or other funding, participation in speakers’ bureaus, membership, employment, consultancies, stock ownership, or other equity interest, and paid expert testimony or patent-licensing arrangements, as well as non-financial ones such as personal or professional relationships, affiliations, knowledge or beliefs in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript. All sources of financial support for the work should be disclosed (including the grant number or other reference number if any).

For Reviewers

Reviewer Guidelines

Peer review in all its forms plays an important role in ensuring the integrity of the scholarly record. The process depends to a large extent on trust and requires that everyone involved behave responsibly and ethically. Peer reviewers play a central and critical part in the peer-review process, but too often come to the role without any guidance and may be unaware of their ethical obligations. The COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers set out the basic principles and standards to which all peer reviewers should adhere during the peer-review process. It is hoped they will provide helpful guidance to researchers, be a reference for journals and editors in guiding their reviewers, and act as an educational resource for institutions in training their students and researchers.

Before you accept or decline an invitation to review, consider the following questions:

  • Does the article match your area of expertise? Only accept if you feel you can provide a high-quality review.
  • Do you have a potential conflict of interest? Disclose this to the editor when you respond.
  • Do you have time? Reviewing can be a lot of work – before you commit, make sure you can meet the deadline.
  • Do you need to find out more about reviewing and the peer review process? If so, check out the free tutorials on the TJES Peer Review Process

Reviewing Agreement

Respond to the invitation as soon as you can (even if it is to decline) – a delay in your decision slows down the review process and means more waiting for the author. If you do decline the invitation, it would be helpful if you could provide suggestions for alternative reviewers.

If you accept, you must treat the materials you receive as confidential documents. This means you can’t share them with anyone without prior authorization from the editor. Since peer review is confidential, you also must not share information about the review with anyone without permission from the editors and authors.

When you sit down to write the review, make sure you familiarize yourself with TJES Author guidelines.

First read the article. You might consider spot-checking major issues by choosing which section to read first. Below we offer some tips about handling specific parts of the paper.

Methodology

If the manuscript you are reviewing is reporting an experiment, check the methods section first. The following cases are considered major flaws and should be flagged:

  • Unsound methodology
  • Discredited method
  • Missing processes known to be influential on the area of reported research
  • A conclusion drawn in contradiction to the statistical or qualitative evidence reported in the manuscript

For analytical papers examine the sampling report, which is mandated in time-dependent studies. For qualitative research make sure that a systematic data analysis is presented and sufficient descriptive elements with relevant quotes from interviews are listed in addition to the author’s narrative.

Research data and visualizations

Once you are satisfied that the methodology is sufficiently robust, examine any data in the form of figures, tables, or images. Authors may add research data, including data visualizationsto their submission to enable readers to interact and engage more closely with their research after publication. Please be aware that links to data might, therefore, be present in the submission files. These items should also receive your attention during the peer review process. Manuscripts may also contain database identifiers or accession numbers (e.g. genes) in relation to our database linking program.

Critical issues in research data, which are considered to be major flaws can be related to insufficient data points, statistically non-significant variations and unclear data tables.

Ethical considerations

Experiments including patient or animal data should properly be documented. Most journals require ethical approval by the author’s host organization.

Overview

If you don’t spot any major flaws, take a break from the manuscript, giving you time to think. Consider the article from your own perspective. When you sit down to write the review, again make sure you familiarize yourself with TJES Author guidelines.

Your review will help the editor decide whether or not to publish the article. It will also aid the author and allow them to improve their manuscript. Giving your overall opinion and general observations of the article is essential. Your comments should be courteous and constructive, and should not include any ad hominem remarks or personal details including your name and/or affiliation.

Providing insight into any deficiencies is important. You should explain and support your judgment so that both editors and authors are able to fully understand the reasoning behind your comments. You should indicate whether your comments are your own opinion or are reflected by the data and evidence.

Double-Blind Peer Review Guidelines

TJES Certificates

Double-Blind Peer Review Guidelines

TJES  journal uses double-blind review, which means that both the reviewer and author identities are concealed from the reviewers, and vice versa, throughout the review process.

To facilitate this, authors need to ensure that their manuscripts are prepared in a way that does not give away their identity.  To help with this preparation please ensure the following when submitting to Tikrit Journal of Engineering Sciences (TJES)

  • Submit the Title Page containing the Authors details and Blinded Manuscript with no author details as 2 separate files.

Information to help prepare the Title Page

This should include the title, authors’ names and affiliations, and a complete address for the corresponding author including telephone and e-mail address.

Information to help prepare the Blinded Manuscript

Besides the obvious need to remove names and affiliations under the title within the manuscript, there are other steps that need to be taken to ensure the manuscript is correctly prepared for double-blind peer review.  To assist with this process the key items that need to be observed are as follows:

  • Use the third person to refer to work the Authors have previously undertaken, e.g. replace any phrases like “as we have shown before” with “… has been shown before ” .
  • Make sure figures do not contain any affiliation-related identifier
  • Do not eliminate essential self-references or other references but limit self-references only to papers that are relevant for those reviewing the submitted paper.
  • Remove references to funding sources
  • Do not include acknowledgments
  • Remove any identifying information, including author names, from file names and ensure document properties are also anonymized.
